Athenian Decree for Menelaus of Pelagonia

abstract

During the war waged by Athens against Amphipolis and the towns of Chalkidiki in the sixties of the fourth century, the Council and the assembly approved an honorary decree for Menelaus of Pelagonia, a mercenary in Timotheus’ employ. The latter personally attested the commitment and the means provided by his collaborator for the war. The text of the decree asks the Council to let Menelaus in the assembly so that he can be praised and receive additional honours and benefits.
