abstract

Since the nineties, many Stalin’s icons in perfect Old-Russian style have appeared in different regions of the Russian Federation. The essay analyzes the iconography of the icons featuring Stalin and focuses on the debate appeared in the newspapers since then. An outline of the arguments put forward by those backing the veneration of Stalin, including an Orthodox priest who proposed to canonize Stalin, is offered. Finally, as an icon of Putin has recently appeared on the web, some ruminations on the connections between politics and religious devotions in Russia are included.
