dc.description.abstract	The data on the literacy and education level of Roma in Italy, although incomplete, describe a striking gap in comparison to the majority population: a very high level of drop-out rate in primary schools, almost no participation in nursery schools and no further schooling after compulsory education. This situation is clearly a direct effect of the social exclusion in which Roma are forced, although it is related as well to cultural reasons. At the same time, these dramatic shortages in education and vocational training are transforming into elements of amplification and perpetuation of segregation and social marginalization.
